What is RVA Baby?

RVA Baby is a full-service pediatric practice dedicated to the care of newborns. Rather than visiting us in an office, we come to your house and provide care during the first few weeks after a baby is born.

The business was founded by Dr. Janet West, who has practiced pediatrics for nearly two decades. She received her medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. She enjoys meeting new mothers in their homes and experiencing the joys of a newborn with them.

RVA Baby offers 24-hour-a-day support during the first few months of the postpartum period. Even if you already have a pediatrician, you can sign up for RVA Baby’s high touch in home care.

Does RVA Baby provide services for children older than 2 months?

RVA Baby’s mission is to align with pediatric practices to provide the support a family’s needs during the early newborn period.  We do offer acute care visits for our graduates up to 12 months of age. The cost of this service varies but is typically $125-$150.

Can I use RVA Baby services if I live outside of the City of Richmond?

Yes.  RVA Baby mostly provides services in the city of Richmond, Chesterfield County, Henrico County as well as parts of Hanover, Goochland, Prince George and Dinwiddie counties.  If you live outside of these areas, we may still be able to work with you, just send us an email or give us a call. We know it can be challenging to get quality medical care in rural areas of Virginia.

Does RVA Baby accept insurance?

Insurance companies, unfortunately, do not cover pediatric house call visits for routine pediatric care. In some instances, insurance companies will cover nurse visits, but families still need to see the doctor, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Many families will use a Flexible Spending Account or Health Savings Account to cover charges through RVA Baby. Some families have added RVA Baby to their guest registry or purchased gift certificates. We understand the challenge that families face when finding quality medical care, and we want to work with you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out, and RVA Baby can discuss payment options.

When it is best to connect RVA Baby?

Generally, people connect with RVA Baby before a baby is born, but we are happy to connect immediately after a birth or once the mother is discharged. We find ways to accommodate families throughout various stages of the birthing experience. We will make it work if you prefer in-home pediatric care right after birth.

How do I sign up?

Complete the contact form on our website; email us at whatsnext@myrvababy.com or call us at 804-762-3009.

What if my baby requires lab work or hospital admission?

RVA Baby knows that some babies require extra care after a birth. If your baby needs lab work, in most cases, RVA Baby can obtain the samples at home and deliver them to the lab personally. If your baby requires a hospital admission,  we will make sure that your baby receives the best care possible. Your insurance benefits should cover labs and hospital stays.

Do you provide care for moms?

RVA Baby does not specifically provide care for new moms. We do, however, offer advice and support regarding nutrition; ideas for self-care; ways to balance the needs of siblings and partners and how to deal with postpartum anxiety and depression.

Can I give RVA Baby services as a gift?

Absolutely.  RVA Baby’s Baby Bundle or Swaddlin’ Package are the perfect baby shower gift, and there is no need to worry about insurance.  Even if the new parents have selected a pediatrician, we can provide services and help transition the family into their pediatric practice of choice.  Your gift will be custom wrapped and includes an RVA Baby gift set. The expecting family can complete the contact on the website to register.
